I recently finished I Am Number Four. I have yet to see the movie so not sure about that and with The Power Of Six coming out soon I guess the timing is good to review.
Before I read I Am Number Four I had heard mixed reviews about the book and the movie. Good and bad were floated around about one or the other or both. Not sure what to do I figured what the hell I’ll read it. Having a copy of my own at home due to my mother wanting it the opportunity sure was available so I went with it.
The book focused on John who is from another planet leaving his home world with a group of others to head to Earth after his home planet is wiped out essentially, by another race who clearly has no regard for much of anything but an apparent love for death and destruction.
John is 15 and while you would expect extremely great brain power and the ability to go Macgyver and make a star ship out of cooking utensils John is just a kid who gets all kinds of coocoo for coaco puffs over a girl, wants to stay in one place make friends and not travel despite the fact that he and the others from his planet are being hunted despite his guardians warnings. This book annoyed me for that reason much like Room did. I know you are a kid and don’t know any better but for the love of god lives are on the line shut up and go with it.
The story is very little sci-fi even though that is what I expected it’s more fantasy than anything. I didn’t dislike this book I didn’t love it either it was good but I’m not going to break my neck reading it again.
I was expecting more action which the movie trailer is to blame as seeing that I assumed the book would be the same. I was wrong on that one as most of it is John learning about his new and developing abilities and his working on social relationships with new school friends.
The ending had an extensive battle which was good and elaborately laid out.
I’m not saying one shouldn’t read this book or should simply that the expectations should be clear ahead of time. A coming of age story of sorts with fantasy aspect and a bit of teen romance which despite the attempt to come across as the love story of the universe was more teen hormonal puppy love to me.
Keeping that in mind and realistic expectations this book should be an enjoyable read.
