Deadite Press very kindly when I asked sent me three of their recent releases for review. The one that I’ve managed to read here and there in between other reads is Just Like Hell. Deadite Press when I searched for bizarro fiction a new interest of mine came up as one of the few publishers of bizarro. After a recent post on the subject I was told by bizarro fiction author Brandon Sands that Deadite is more horror. Oops my bad. Thanks to Brandon for clearing that up though the covers of the books should really have given it away having said that Just Like Hell starts with a novella that is horror no doubt and then finishes with a few stories that are more bizarre than horror so perhaps a mix. Either way a good read so call it what you will no matter really it’s good and that is what counts.
The novella Just Like Hell is about a group of jocks who learn that a teammate is gay. Holy mother of god gay! We must torture the shit out of him! And sadly they do in extreme detail. The story was excellent at setting your emotions aflame the injustice, the indignity, the just plain grossness of what was done will have you steamed. The revenge however left me disappointed it was well not very graphic and seriously after the torture that was done to the kid and his boyfriend I wanted specific details on what he did to those asshole jock friends of his. Maybe I’m bloodthirsty that way but damn that’s what revenge is or should be any way.
The bonus short stories were great and I really enjoyed them. My favorite was A Team Building Exercise though the others were also a great read. So those who like horror and may be interested in dipping a toe into bizarro waters I’d say check it out. I’d also like to mention that the cover for Just Like Hell is way more extreme than the actual stories are so for anyone who would hesitate for that reason don’t.
Just Like Hell was a good opener for me and I’m looking forward to checking out the others Deadite sent me.
