She was nothing like her sister. Zanas had always
been the courageous and dedicated one. Asenya was arrogant, selfish, and
demanding. All of the qualities that Dreamers have…
Kidnapped and taken beneath, Asenya fights to find
out who she really is, discovering that her potential is far greater than she
ever could have imagined. But that destiny may finally be the end of her, and
what she once was.
May she
make the right choices.
Excerpt:

There was one thing that bothered her after Zanas had left, something that nagged at the back of her mind, until finally she could not dismiss it any longer.

Everywhere she looked, she saw the strong belief that all were allowed to choose. She had been taken below by force, and there was that part of her that wondered if she had been placed in the right clan. She knew that she had received the marks of the Dreamer, and that should be sign enough, but still there was that feeling.

Asenya snuck out in the middle of the night, following the path that she traveled down her first night below. She had been learning enough in antiquities to understand the concept of the pledge temple ,and Falon had already confided in her that he had removed the barrier spells around the hold. She could come and go as she pleased.

Usually anyone wishing to pledge a clan, did so when they believed that they were old enough to leave their families, and venture into the lives of their destinies. This was always done in the pledge temple, by those that were city born, or born within the clan.

There was a rumor that there was a spell on the temple that only allowed the pledger to speak the truth, sometimes to the speaker’s surprise. But the people of the beneath believed in nothing stronger than the tenant that Alwahi knew everyone’s path.

It was chilly in the dark shadows of the tunnel, making it seem as though she really were in the underworld. When she came to the diverging tunnels, she paused, looking up at the circling staircase that led to the temple.

For some reason, she was starting to feel afraid, the quiet of the shadows making her uneasy. Perhaps it had not been the best idea to run here in the middle of the night, when no one knew she was gone.

Shaking herself, Asenya closed her hands into fists, narrowing her eyes as she took one deep breath. She had come here for a reason, and she wasn’t going to give up when she was this close. Asenya began walking up the stairs, higher and higher, until she was pushing open the door that led into the temple.

Three throne chairs greeted her as she ventured inside, the steps of her feet echoing across the long hall. She felt immediately an overwhelming sence of reverence, the building speaking to her very soul.

It spoke of history and awe. I told whispers of the countless feet that had walked the very stone floor that she stepped across. And finally, it hinted at destiny yet to be fulfilled.

Asenya walked into the center of the magnificent building, closing her eyes and inhaling deep once again. She flung her arms outward, letting her head fall back as her eyes opened wide.

“I pledge,” her voice came out on its own. “Dreamer…”

It was like a wind that escaped her lips, traveling past her face and to the room, swirling like a mighty wind around her body, lifting her hair and the hem of her dress from the ground. The air that swirled around her brightened, turning to a shimmering trail, like the loving embrace of some spirit.

Dreamer…

A word spoken, but not, simply a melody on the wind. And then she knew, she knew that she had been placed in exactly the clan that she had belonged to, and deep down inside, she realized that she had always known.

Releases October 31st

River Black lives in a world where only the strong survive.
The earth has changed to a brutal climate and the survivors will do anything to
live. The eastern continents unleash a biochemical weapon on their enemies, and
directly onto River’s world. She will have to leave her quiet existence in the
forest and venture to the slaver fortress and further beyond, into the deepest
part of the surviving cities. If she doesn’t die first, or rise infected…

Excerpt:

Aspen was the first to speak, all
of us still slightly in shock at what we had just witnessed.

“We have to clear out the house.
I don’t know if all of them left, or if some of them got in, but we have to
know for sure,” he said, the urgency in his voice clear.

“I’ll take upstairs,” I responded
immediately, wanting to get a familiar perch from above, and recalculate our
current situation.

The fire still burned in the pit
in the entryway, illuminating the three of us as I walked up the curved stairs.
I quickly lost sight of them, the wall turning smoothly into a hall. The
hallway was covered in shadows, the dying embers of fire pits casting light through
the open doors of the rooms.

“Hello,” I called out weakly.

I didn’t like the idea of going blindly
into each room, possibly ambushed at any moment. It would be better to draw
them out into the hall, and cut them down as they ran towards me.

I waited, my body tense and fluid
at the same time, ready to spring if needed. But nothing came. I spoke louder a
second time, my ears straining as my voice traveled down the hall. Once again
nothing came out of the rooms and I walked forward, entering each one and
searching every corner, my rifle always ready.

A few were bedrooms, which I
frowned upon. It was a bad omen to have bedrooms aboveground. It was obvious
that the townspeople had become lazy. I entered one more room that was a study,
a desk crammed into the corner, covered in books. Even in the most stressful
situation, I found myself becoming excited at the plethora of reading material
that was before me. It was rare to see one
book, let alone dozens.

The last thing in the hallway was
the stairs leading to the final floor. Once again I walked the smooth curve of
the stairwell, the stone giving off a sense of protection, although it would do
nothing to help me if I was attacked by the infected.

It was dark down the long
hallway, only one room at the far end giving any light, the rest of the doors closed.
Once again I called out and waited, keeping my eyes on the farthest room. I was
greeted only by the sound of my own voice.

Taking a breath, I pushed open
the closest door, holding my gun out in front of me. I knew the moment I
stepped in the room that I was not alone, there was a presence in the room, a
presence in turmoil. I could almost hear the chaotic thoughts, trapped and
angry. I knew when I heard the low animalistic growl, that I had walked into
the room of one of the infected.

My shoes slipped on the floor as
I walked towards the sound, a trail of blood beneath me, as though someone had
dragged themselves to the door and shut it. I walked around the bed towards the
continued hissing, expecting the creature to come sprinting at me. But it remained
in the corner. I walked closer, and finally saw white gleaming eyes as it
stared at me, a hideous grin on its face.

It was a woman, or what was left
of a woman.

These rooms were bare compared to
the extravagant rooms below. I could only imagine the ones belowground. Logic
would say that they belonged to servants, possibly even slaves. It was clear
that even with the thick window covering the rooms would quickly get hot during
the extreme heat. It would be torturous to be forced to live up here. On a
beautiful day like this, they had all probably had their windows open, the
first to succumb to the plague that had been dropped upon us.

I almost tripped over the two
severed legs that were littered on the floor. It looked like someone had taken
an axe to them, and the brutality of the scene shocked me. Instead of dying,
the woman’s wounds had almost healed, the blood stopping its flow.

The growling increased as the
woman dragged herself by her arms towards me. Her mouth had started the rabid
chomping that seemed a telltale trait of the infected. Bloody fingers reached
for me, just as I lifted the rifle once again and placed it to the woman’s
temple, pulling the trigger with a quickly flick of my finger.

I took a closer look at the
carnage around me, the bloody legs and the limp body of the infected woman.
“Yup, looks like a Zombie to me.”

I wiped the blood from my boots
in the hallway, leaving a creepy trail of red footprints. There was one more
room before the open one at the end, and my hairs rose as I pushed open the
next door. I was greeted by silence, the room empty. Even the shutters were
closed, and from the dust on the furniture I could tell it had been some time
since anyone had been here.

I moved back out into the hall
and walked towards the last room, the light was not coming from a burning pit
but from an open window, the sun shining into the room. My trigger finger
tensed once again, concentrating on everything in front of me. The first thing
I saw was the bed, covered in blood. Another servant was there, axe marks
evident on her body.

But this one was clearly dead,
its head lying a few feet from the body.

“I doubt you will be getting up,”
I said, and that’s when I realized there was someone else in the room.

It was another woman, her hair
dark and her clothes fine. She was not some servant, but a mistress of the
house. She was young, not much older than I was, and she carried an axe that
dripped blood onto the floor as she stared at me.

And as if that wasn’t enough here is a quick guest post by Monique on strong female characters. A topic I love!

Look at these amazing covers the author herself created them. When I discovered that I was all kinds of impressed and envious, I seriously have no skills. I’m pleased to have Monique Morgan on to tell us about herself and her new books Pursuer and Dreamer. Be sure to check out her guest post from yesterday.

Please tell us about yourself –

My name is Monique Morgan, and I am an indie author who writes YA books.

Who are your favorite authors and your favorite books? –

My favorite author of all time would have to be Anne Rice. I personally think that she “did” vampires better than anyone else ever has. There is just something about her writing that is so beautiful. Another favorite author is Anne McCaffrey. I have always been drawn to science fiction, and the magic of the impossible? I put a question mark there because, hey, we could be zooming around to different planets someday or growing telepathic abilities… you never know

What are you reading now? –

Right now I’m reading Hollowland by Amanda Hocking. I love Zombies, and believe it or not, I have never read a book by Amanda Hocking. I’ve read about her indie success, and I was curious about her writing.

Have you always been writing or is it more recent? –

I have been writing stories since I was a little girl, and I have started novels in the past but never got past the first couple of chapters. I honestly don’t think I was at the right place at that time in my life, and when it was right, it just was.

Tell me about The Alwahi series –

The Alwahi series will be minimum three novels, telling the story of three clans in an underground kingdom called the beneath. The first book in the series is Pursuer. I say minimum in the above statement because there are certain characters that may have their own story told as well… but I can’t say anything further right now;)

You created the amazing covers for Pursuer and Dreamer fantastic job, how important is an eye catching cover? –

Thank you for the compliment! I think that it is extremely important. When looking through e-books that’s the first thing that is seen. If the cover is enticing, it is more likely to draw the customer to click and find out more about it. As an indie author, I think it’s even more important. We want people to give our books a chance, and that first impression may be all you get.

What future works do we have to look forward to? –

I am currently working on Dreamer, the second book in the Alwahi Series. Dreamer should be out sometime in the fall. There will also be a third book, Alchemist. Also… I have another book in the works, that’s not part of the Alwahi Series, but for now it’s a secret.

Tell us about Pursuer –

The story of Pursuer begins with two sisters leaving on vacation. Their plane crashes into the ocean, but not into the world that they came from. They enter a new beautifully deadly realm, the kingdom of Alwahi. In order to find her sister Zanas travels to the underground world of the beneath, and becomes a pledge of the fierce clan of the Pursuers. However, there is no failure when pledging Pursuer, it’s succeed or die.

Heres a snippet:

Her breath came out in small, excited gasps, her teeth bared, blood dripping down her chin. She could hear the sound of her own growling, as her heart pounded in her chest. Her vision began to clear slightly and her team came into view, reminding her of another hunting party she had hunted with. Just like that party, she found all eyes staring at her, and recognized the familiar emotion…respect.
Zanas found herself face to face with him. She looked into his eyes searching for the other emotion she always saw in people once they had truly seen her for what she was, a predator. But she saw nothing but wild excitement reflected in his eyes.
There was no fear.

First I would like to thank Jessica for having me here!:) Let me introduce myself. My name is Monique Morgan, I am an indie author who writes YA books.

Today I would like to talk to you about covers. I know that we have all heard the saying “Don’t judge a book by the cover”, but let’s be real, we all have at one time or another. When you’re an indie author this could be the difference between someone giving your book a chance… or not. I don’t claim to be the best cover designer; there are many others that are far better than I am. However, I have received quite a few positive comments my covers, and let me let you in on a secret… it wasn’t that hard.

I’m a researcher by heart, and the first thing that I did when I decided I wanted to create my own cover, was go to Amazon and look at covers and book reviews for my genre. You will be surprised how many times a review will include something along the lines of “I loved this cover!” What I came away with were these things.
Many of the “loved” covers had:
1. Unique angle. (sometimes this included just the body, or just the arms, half a face, etc)
2. Pop of color.
3. Interesting looking word appearance (author name, title etc)
4. Series covers had something in common.

After my research on the covers I knew what customers where enjoying, but how was I going to make one myself? I’m not a graphic artist. I don’t paint or draw. And that’s were Shutterstock came into the picture. This is a royalty free website, with millions of photos. What’s royalty free? It means when you purchase the image you also purchase the legal right to use it, in covers, advertisements, bookmarks, basically how you want, more details here) The price runs from $19 per image or my favorite 5 images for $49. I combed through their images until I found an image that I LOVED. The only problem was, it was the perfect cover for Dreamer, not Pursuer. But hey, I had a base (the same face without adornments), so technically I could add to it and make it a cover for Pursuer… but how?
More research…:) I needed some kind of software to play with photos. We all know the biggest software out there for photos, and it also comes with a BIG price. So I started comparing reviews for other brands that were far more affordable. I found Corel Paintshop Pro X4 on Amazon, for $49.99. And even better it came with 21 free downloads from Fotolia (another royalty free stock photo site).
This was the first time I had ever used any kind of software like this, so I read the nice little how-to book, and just fooled around with it. Once I got the hang of it, I found it very user friendly. I won’t go into too many details on how to use Corel Paintshop, but I will mention my favorite aspect, “clone”. What this does is copy one part of a picture to another, stroke for stroke. I like to think of it as one of those scratch-to-find-if-your-a-winner things, the more you “scratch”, so to speak, the more of the other picture comes out in the new picture. This is how I made the cover for Pursuer.
What about the title and author look, you ask? I did this with Corel too, using a nice feature called “illuminate”. I spent many hours on Pursuer, but honestly, it was more fun than anything else. Dreamer was far easier, because I didn’t have to make many changes, and I knew more of what I was doing.
So for around $100 I created 2 different covers, I’m working on a third, and I have quite a few images waiting in the wings. Technically it could be done with less, if you can find the images you like on fotolia. Shutterstock and fotolia do have duplicate images on their sites. But I found I liked shutterstock’s images better.
My favorite part was having control of what I wanted, and how it would look. I really didn’t have any background in this area, so honestly anybody could do the same, as long as you’re willing to put in the time and the effort. Here’s a look at my covers, hope you like them :)
