What Makes A Leading Man Sexy?

When I was given the assignment to guest blog for Jess, I visited her site, which is something I always do anyway. Normally, my guest postings are about writing because, let’s face it, it’s what I know and why I’m doing this. But, I noticed Jess’s site was a little different than the normal blog I pop in to with a word or two. Jess’s blog is sexy .. and it wasn’t just her giveaway complete with chocolate you-know-what’s that gave it away. I had to put my thinking-cap on.

So, I’m going to go into this post with that in mind … and I want to blog about sexy leading men. And that idea usually leads to a question … What makes a leading man sexy? What makes you, the reader, wish he’d crawl from the pages of a novel straight into your bed?

For me, when I think of the leading men in novels that I swoon over, two jump into my head almost simultaneously: Edward Cullen (The Twilight Saga) and Peeta Mellark (The Hunger Games Trilogy). But, why? Why do those two men from YA novels evoke that reaction from me? I’m a reader, I read a lot … lots of men wander through my mind as I inhale novels … and yet, when I ask myself that question, those two hands shot up the fastest.

I think what makes a leading man irresistible is when the peel back the layers of machismo and show you their … heart.

The characters I’ve “fallen for” in the novels are not the protagonists. But, it is through the eyes of the leading ladies that I’ve discovered myself won over. It is through the emotions of the narrator that we are introduced to these dashing fellas and learn really what’s at stake for them behind the brooding eyes and perfectly chiseled chests.

Books don’t have the same advantages as movies when it comes to soliciting your swoon. You can’t see the handsome man or hear the infliction of his voice, the things we fall for in real life are one dimensional on the printed page. These faceless, bodiless creatures of imagination come to life with one thing and one thing only … words. And with words, writers give these leading men attributes and prose that melt even the hardest of hearts, make you wish your husband or boyfriend or significant other was just a little more romantic and brazen or daring.

When I sat down to write The Milestone Tapes, my leading man, Gabe Chamberland, was floating around in my head. I knew only two things about him. One was that he was a husband and two, he was going to be on his own with his daughter in a very short period of time. Everything else was unknown. I worked those things out as I wrote.

So who is Gabe now that the novel is done? I think he’s a balance. Both of which are evident in the reviews of my novel — some readers have said he’s “too perfect” and other’s have told me that they “hate him” for being so selfish at times. Obviously you can’t be both — so those reviews thrill me.

I didn’t write Gabe to be sexy … or perfect … or selfish. Though, he can be all those things. I wrote him to feel real. I wanted Gabe to be a struggling man … on the edge of the end, fighting to keep his head above water and then, to figure out how to move on in his own time. It’s not easy to take away the love of character’s life, but in this book I had to do just that.

My question now is … who is your favorite leading man and literature and why?

Ashley Mackler-Paternostro was born in Naperville, Illinois, where she still lives with her husband Mark and their three dogs. A hairstylist by trade, Ashley will often say that some of the best stories she has ever heard were told to her while working behind the chair. A life long reader with an insatiable appetite for good books, she decided to merge her love of great stories — both told and written — into her own brand of story telling.
When she’s not being held captive in her home office by words, Ashley fancies herself a flea market hunter with a weakness for Japanese glass floats and repurposing vintage goods.
Her latest book is The Milestone Tapes.

ABOUT THE MILESTONE TAPES

Jenna Chamberland never wanted anything more than to be a wife and mother. That is, until she realized that her life was ending after a three-year battle against breast cancer. Now, all she really wants is more time.
With 4,320 hours left to live, Jenna worries for her loved ones and what she knows awaits them on the other side: Gabe will have to make the slip from husband to widower, left alone to raise their seven-year-old daughter; Mia will be forced to cope with life without her mother by her side. In a moment of reflection, Jenna decides to record a set of audiocassettes — The Milestone Tapes – leaving her voice behind as a legacy for her daughter.
Nine years later, Mia is a precocious sixteen-year-old and her life is changing all around, all she wants is her mother. Through the tapes, Jenna’s voice returns to teach Mia the magic of life, her words showing her daughter how to spread her wings and embrace the coming challenges with humor, grace and hope.
THE MILESTONE TAPES is the journey of love between a parent and child, and of the bonds that holds them when life no longer can.
